On March 14, 2013, Jeff Toalson was awarded the Jefferson Davis Gold medal, by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, for his three volumes of history on the War Between the States. Presenting the award are historian Karen Gregory (L) and president Mary Vial (R) of the General Stuart Chapter 2195 of Richmond, Virginia. Past winners of this award include Douglas Southall Freeman, Shelby Foote, Clifford Dowdey and Bell I. Wiley. All three of the books are told in the ‘first person’ by more than 400 Southern individuals, 160 of whom had never before been published.
It was a great honor to receive this recognition. I accepted the award on behalf of the 400 plus ‘voices’ that told these stories through their diaries, letters and journals. It has indeed been a great priviledge to preserve their ‘voices’ and share them. My works are done in and dedicated to their memory.
